In the Ocean, is an all the more no nonsense narrative by Scheffer about the historical backdrop of the Bang on a Can celebration and its related developments in current music. There are talked commitments from and selections of music by John Cage, Philip Glass, (a genuinely furious) Steve Reich, Elliott Carter, Louis Andriessen, and in addition the can-bangers themselves. It is instructive, provocative, and stylishly satisfying.
